Toss & Fetch Scoring
This app is designed to score K9 Frisbee Toss & Fetch Worldwide League competition rounds quickly and accurately during live club events. It supports both iPad and iPhone layouts, saves season data, creates weekly and season CSV reports, allows full data backup for transferring current season data to another iOS device, and generates shareable round scorecards and weekly results images.
Main Event/Teams Screen
This is the default/primary screen. From this screen you can do and see the following:
Use the Season Setup function on the Utility Menu to enter the Club name and Season name, and to select the Season Type (60/90 second rounds). The Club and Season names are used for exporting round snapshots and weekly/season reports. The Season Type impacts the scoring rules and determines the duration of the timer on the scoring screen, so take care to set it correctly. Once scoring has begun for a season, the Season Type is locked so it cannot be changed accidentally. Be sure to set the Season Type correctly BEFORE scoring begins!
Select the current Week of the season (i.e. Week 1-5).
You may set the competition Date for each week of the season.
You may enter Weather conditions or notes for the selected week (optional).
The competition date and weather conditions are referenced on the weekly/season reports.
Judge: You may enter the active scoring judge’s name or initials. When a round is scored, the name of the active scoring judge is stored with that round and will appear on the generated round scorecard. Remember to change the name/entry when switching judges.
The number of Active Teams for the selected week is displayed in the top/header section.
You may change the color scheme for the current week BEFORE scoring begins. See the Field Theme section below.
Tap the Utility menu icon to access a host of setup, export, import, and backup features. See below for details.
Tap the + icon to add a team to the current season. Teams can be added before, during, or after an event. See the Adding/Editing Teams section below.
Teams are displayed below the top header.
Use the Sort button to select how the team rows are displayed. You can sort alphabetically by handler or dog name, or use Manual mode to enable on-the-fly changing of the run order and hiding of inactive teams for the chosen week. You may also sort the team rows by week or season totals.
At the right of each team row, you'll either see a green R1 / R2 button, or a numerical round score. You can tap R1 or R2 to begin scoring a round for that team. Tap the score if you want to review or edit a previously-scored round.
Scroll the bottom section to see teams that don't fit in the initial view
Team List
Each team row displays the team's position in the displayed list, the handler and dog names, Round 1 score, Round 2 score, and Total score.
The list can be sorted in Manual order, alphabetically by Handler name or Dog name, or by Total score (high to low). During competitions, either manual sorting or alphabetic sorting by Handler or Dog name is recommended.
In Manual mode, team rows can be moved to the desired run order position using the controls to the left of each row.
The Here checkbox indicates whether the team is active for the selected week.
The Hide Inactive switch hides teams that are not marked active for the selected week.
Teams that already have scores recorded for the selected week remain visible even when Hide Inactive is enabled, to help prevent scored teams from disappearing from view accidentally.
The icon between Judge selector and the Utility button allows you to select different color schemes for the scoring screen.
A different field theme could be selected for each week of a season. We'll occasionally introduce new themes, so look for different themes when you update the app!
The selected field theme is used on the scoring screen and on all round scorecards / snapshots for that week.
To keep all snapshots consistent for a given week, the field theme is locked after scoring begins for that week. Be sure to set the field theme BEFORE scoring begins for that week.
If no theme has yet been selected for a week, the app uses the default field theme.
Adding / Editing Teams
Tap the Add Team button to add a new team.
For each team, you can opt to specify Tiny Dog, Junior Handler, and Rollers options. Accurate scoring is dependent on the selected team options.
Swipe a team row to the left to edit or delete the team.
Caution: Deleting a team removes that team and all of its scores for the entire season.
Scoring on iPad
Scoring is a two-tap process - tap the LOCATION, then tap the OUTCOME.
On iPad, scoring uses a field map and catch/miss location dots (iPhone scoring does not have the location mapping feature due to the reduced screen area).
First tap: When the attempt outcome is known, tap the approximate dog/disc landing location on the field as best as possible. The location will be displayed with a yellow dot. You can tap as many times as needed to get the location as precise as you like.
Second tap: After the location has been recorded, tap the corresponding outcome: Catch, Airborne, or Miss.
Attempt result: The outcome of the attempt will be immediately displayed as a tile in the Attempts row. If the 'floating score animation' option is enabled (Scoring Feedback options screen),you will also see the score/outcome for that attempt 'pop up' in the top corner of the field area.
Tap an attempt tile to rescore that attempt. You'll be prompted to confirm (as seen here).
After tapping OK, just perform the normal two-tap routine (location, then outcome) to enter the new outcome.
Other Scoring Screen Functions
Handler and Dog names and special team designations appear at the top left.
The selected Round appears at the top right.
Attempt and catch count, attempt tiles, and total score appear in the bar above the field image.
Additional controls are located below the playing field section (see descriptions below the screenshot).
A Catch Map toggle at the far left in the bottom row will toggle the visibility of previous scoring attempts on the field graphic.
The Flip button will reverse the field so the scoring judge can stand on either sideline and maintain the correct field orientation.
The Settings icon provides access to toggles for haptic feedback, audio feedback, and floating score animation.
The Timer button allows you to start or stop the timer. This can be used if no one is available to run a timer. It is recommended to connect the iPad/iPhone to a Bluetooth speaker which is placed within an appropriate distance to the throw line. The timer duration is automatically set based on the Season Setup from the Utility Panel. Note: If the timer is stopped, then tapping the button again RESTARTS the timer; the previous countdown/timer cannot be resumed at the point at which it was stopped. Exiting the scoring screen does NOT stop a timer in progress.
Undo will remove the last recorded attempt. It can be tapped multiple times to undo multiple attempts.
Reset will remove all attempts and the score. This action cannot be undone.
Tapping the End button will present a confirmation that you wish to end scoring for the current round. After confirming, you will be returned to the main/event screen.
A team may be designated as a Rollers team in the team settings.
The Rollers designation remains visible in the team list and exports.
Because Rollers-designated teams are permitted to change from Rollers to conventional "air throws" during the course of a season, the scoring screen includes a toggle to enable the conventional "Air Throws" option.
If Air Throws is enabled for a Rollers team for a given week, airborne bonus scoring becomes available for that Rollers-designated team.
The app remembers the most recent Rollers / Air Throws setting from the prior week but allows the scoring judge to choose a different setting for the current week.
Changing a Rollers team’s weekly Air Throws setting affects scoring for that week. The team’s season designation as a Rollers team remains visible.
Scoring on iPhone
On iPhone, the app uses a simpler and more compact quick-scoring layout.
Tap the Zone first, then tap the appropriate Outcome button.
Zones: 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, OB.
Outcomes: Catch, Airborne, Miss.
Tap an attempt chip to rescore.
Use Undo to remove the last attempt, Reset to clear the round, and End to leave scoring.
Here's what the scoring screen looks like on iPhone:
Scorecards / Snapshots
After each weekly competition, the Generate Round Scorecards function in the Utility Menu can be used to create scorecard images.
Here's an example Round Scorecard:
Scorecards include handler and dog names, club and season, week and round, total score, attempts and catches, Tiny Dog bonus if applicable, attempt chips, and the field map for mapped rounds.
If a scoring judge was entered on the main screen when the round was first scored, that judge's name/initials will appear at the bottom right of the scorecard.
If a round is reviewed and edited/re-scored, you can generate the scorecards again, and the corrected scorecard will automatically overwrite the older version.
All scorecards for a given week use the same field theme for consistency.
Scorecards are saved to the app’s Files folder (Files app > On My iPad > Toss & Fetch).
Tip: If you have a Mac, you can easily select all the Round Scorecard images and AirDrop them to your computer.
* Scorecard generation for iPhone is currently not available.
Scoring Rules
The app supports 60-second and 90-second season formats.
For 90-second rounds, only the 5 highest-scoring attempts count.
For 60-second rounds, all attempts count.
Teams with Tiny Dogs are awarded one bonus point for each in-bounds catch that earns points. Teams with Junior Handlers are awarded one point for in-bounds catches less than ten yards, and for catches made out-of-bounds. Tiny Dog bonus points, Junior Handler rules, Rollers rules, airborne scoring, and OB / OC handling are all handled automatically by the app.
The following symbols will be displayed in the attempts list. Each has a point value of zero; the labels are for display purposes only.
M = in-bounds miss.
OB = out-of-bounds miss.
OC = out-of-bounds catch.
Attempts, Catches, and Highlights
During scoring, the app displays total Attempts, total Catches, and the Total round score.
In 90-second seasons, the five highest-scoring attempts are highlighted.
In 60-second seasons, all positive-scoring attempts are highlighted
The Utility Menu provides access to setup, import/export, and data management tools.
The Setup section includes options for Help, Season Setup, Pre-Checklist, Google Sheet Setup, and Rotation Label customization.
Options in the Export section include weekly CSV, run order template, season CSV files, round scorecards and weekly results images, and Google Sheet upload.
Import options include teams from Google Sheet, and run order import.
Backup options allow exporting and restoring full season data using JSON files. It is recommended to do a backup after each competition week is completed. You can overwrite or keep older backups. Restore season data from a previous backup (.json) file if/when needed.
Danger Zone actions include clearing all teams and starting a new season.
Some actions require confirmation before proceeding.
Explanations for each item in the Utility Menu follow:
Help: Displays the built-in Help content.
Season Setup: allows entering and editing of Club and Season names and season type.
Pre-Scoring Checklist: displays a checklist of items to configure or confirm prior to beginning scoring for an upcoming competition week.
Google Sheet Setup: enables connecting to your club's Google Sheet for roster import and uploading scores from the app to the club Sheet.
Rotation Labels: allows you to customize the names of the manual run order sections (e.g., First Rotation, Second Rotation; or First Round, Second Round).
Export Weekly CSV: exports a .csv file with team and scoring data for the current week.
Export Run Order Template: exports a .csv file with fictional team data, to be used as a template for setting your own Run Order using your own club roster.
Upload Week to Google Sheet: sends the current week’s team totals to the configured Google Sheet. See "Google Sheets Integration" section for details.
Generate Round Scorecards: use this function to create scorecard images which include handler and dog names, club and season, week and round, total score, attempts and catches, Tiny Dog bonus if applicable, attempt chips, and the field map for mapped rounds. These image files can be shared via social media, email, etc.
Export Weekly Results Image: generates and exports the scoring numbers for the current week in one or more PNG images, written to the Leaderboards folder (in iOS > Files > Toss & Fetch scoring). Twenty teams fit on each image, so if there are more than twenty teams, multiple PNG files will be exported.
Export Season CSV: exports a .csv file with team and scoring data for each week of the current season for which scores have been recorded.
Export Season Standings CSV: exports a summary of the season standings, rather than the detailed scoring records. Intended as a more concise season-results report, showing each team’s accumulated weekly results and season standing without all of the individual scoring detail contained in the full Season CSV.
Import Teams from Google Sheet: Connects to the configured Google Sheet (as configured on the Google Sheet Setup page), and imports team data into the current season, adding any new teams, while leaving any existing teams intact.
Import Run Order from File: merges teams from an external .csv file into the current season. Team information can be added to a .csv file (use the Template file as described above) and saved to Files on the iOS device, and then imported into the app. The teams specified in the imported file will be marked as Active for the pending competition week, and will be displayed in the order specified in the .csv file when choosing the Manual sort view.
Create JSON Backup: saves the full season data, including teams, settings, scores, and attempt data. This data can be transferred to another iOS device running the app, and the backup data can be imported on the other device. This is useful if using multiple iOS devices during the course of a season, or even to enable switching devices mid-competition.
Restore JSON Backup: restores full season data from a backup file. CAUTION: Importing JSON backup data overwrites ALL current season data on the device.
Clear All Teams: Deletes all team data from the app, including team names, handler names, team settings, and scores. This action requires user confirmation.
New Season: The New Season function clears the current season’s scoring data and season details, but keeps the team list and team settings. This action requires confirmation. Season data from a previous season can be restored if a backup file is available.
Import Run Order from File and Export Run Order Template
Use Utility → Import Run Order from File to create the week's Manual run order from a CSV file.
For an example of the required CSV format, use Utility → Export Run Order Template. The exported template contains sample teams and can be opened and edited in Google Sheets, Excel, Numbers, or another spreadsheet application.
Each row in the CSV represents one scoring appearance. Each team must appear exactly twice in the file: once for its R1 appearance and once for its R2 appearance.
A team's two appearances do not have to be in different rotations. Both appearances may be placed in the First Rotation, both may be placed in the Second Rotation, or one may be placed in each rotation.
The rows do not have to be arranged in the actual Run Order; the numbers in the Rotation and Order columns determine the Run Order.
The CSV columns are: Rotation, Order, First, Last, Assign Division, ROLLER, Dog Name, and TINY HEIGHT (CENTIMETERS). If the column order of the file you're trying to import does not match this, the import will not work.
Rotation must be 1 or 2. Order specifies the team's running position within that rotation.
First, Last, and Dog Name are used to match imported entries to teams already stored in the app.
Assign Division is included for compatibility with league run-order spreadsheets but is not used by the app.
ROLLER identifies a Rollers team. A nonblank TINY HEIGHT (CENTIMETERS) value identifies a Tiny Dog. The numerical height value is only used to identify the team as having a Tiny Dog.
Junior Handler is not included in the run-order CSV format. New teams imported from the file are created with Junior Handler turned off. The Junior Handler designation MUST be set within the app after the import is done.
Teams in the CSV file which are not already in the app are added automatically. For new teams, Rollers and Tiny Dog settings are taken from the CSV.
Existing teams keep their current Tiny Dog, Rollers, and Junior Handler settings. If the CSV contains different Tiny Dog or Rollers information for an existing team, the app will report the difference but will not overwrite the team's existing settings in the app.
Each of the two appearances for a team must contain the same Tiny Dog and Rollers information. Conflicting settings will cause the import to be rejected.
Every team must appear exactly twice. The app will not create missing appearances or discard extra appearances. If the run order is incomplete or contains invalid or conflicting information, correct the source CSV and import it again.
Importing a run order replaces the current Manual run order for the selected week and updates weekly attendance. Teams included in the file are marked Here; teams not included are marked as Inactive. The Active/Inactive status can be changed after the import.
Hide Inactive is automatically turned on after a successful run-order import so the team list displays only the participating teams.
Tips
When scoring on iPad, tap the landing spot as accurately as possible for the best catch map and scorecard images. Avoid overlapping dots when possible to maintain sequence visibility.
Use Review Mode to verify and correct rounds if necessary.
Enter the current scoring judge before scoring rounds if you want that information saved on scorecards.
Choose a field theme for the week before scoring begins if you want that week’s snapshots to use a different look.
Import a run order file to quickly set up the entire event order. This is visible when you change the Sort mode to Manual.
Use JSON backup regularly to back up season data.
Export scorecards and weekly results after each event for easy sharing.
IMPORTANT: You must maintain the app storage. Repeated use without removing old files will consume storage space on your iOS device.
